Career Preparation

The planning specialists at Xavier’s Career Services Center help you through every stage of landing a job in your area of study. They utilize a targeted, four-year plan to prepare you for life after college.

First year

  • Evaluate your strengths and develop short- and long-term goals.
  • Meet with a career counselor and utilize Xavier’s computerized self-assessment system.
  • Expand your information base about the working world through the Center’s resource library and web page links.

Second Year

  • Learn more about various majors and how they relate to specific careers.
  • Research careers through information interviews, job shadowing and Internet searches.
  • Start to develop a resume.
  • Declare a major.

Third Year

  • Build career and leadership skills.
  • Consider postgraduate options such as graduate and professional school.
  • Attend career fairs and workshops.
  • Build interviewing skills through mock interviews.
  • Get involved in career-related internships and volunteer work.
  • Learn about other cultures first-hand by studying abroad.

Senior Year

  • Develop a plan of action for life after graduation.
  • Finalize your resume to compete in today’s job market.
  • Take necessary exams and apply to graduate and professional schools.
  • Register for on-campus interviews and full-time employment opportunities through Xavier eRecruiting.
