Sociology: Majors & Minors

Sociology is the study of social life and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. Few fields have such broad scope, ranging from the study of the family to hostile mobs, from the behavior of individuals and groups in complex organizations to the role of sport in society. Sociology offers many distinctive ways of looking at the world so as to offer new ideas and solutions and assess the old. Sociology offers a wide range of research techniques which can be applied in many specific areas of study and practice.

Xavier's sociology majors are equipped with a clear overview of the subject matter in a way that will relate to everyday experiences. More specifically, they have a sociological perspective based upon sound sociological methods and theories for a thorough understanding of social behavior.

To major in sociology, 18 semester hours of specified sociology courses and 12 semester hours of elective sociology courses are required. Students are encouraged to include job experience by participating in an internship in local social service agencies or related organizations.

To strengthen and broaden the background of all Xavier students, a liberal arts core curriculum consisting of courses in history, mathematics, modern language, philosophy, fine arts, social science and theology is also part of the program.

Upon successful completion of the undergraduate program, students receive a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in sociology. Students are then prepared to enter graduate school or pursue one of the many sociology-related occupations.

Requirements for the Associate of Arts degree in sociology include 15 hours of specified sociology courses in addition to the Xavier core curriculum. In addition, a cumulative 2.000 average must be attained in the sociology courses.
