Test Taking Policy

·        Students requesting non-standard test-taking conditions must be registered with the Learning Assistance Center and have current and comprehensive documentation regarding the disabling condition which necessitates the non-standard conditions.  The documentation must be on file at the Center.

  •       Students requesting non-standard test-taking conditions must complete and sign a "request for accommodations" sheet EVERY semester.  This sheet lists the courses in which the student is enrolled and the names of the professors teaching said courses.  It enables the Director of the LAC or her agent to contact the student's professors and notify them of the disabling condition and the accommodations needed.

  •       It is the student's responsibility to make all arrangements for testing in terms of the following:

1.   Contacting the professor well before the test date to remind him or her of the non-standard conditions.

2.    Arranging for the test's arrival at the center and return delivery to the professor.

3.   Contacting the Learning Assistance Center at least 48 hours before the test time to set up an appointment for test taking. See our "sign up for a test" page for further information.

  •       The student is expected to take the examination at the same time and on the same date as the rest of the class (night classes do not apply) unless there is a class time conflict.  Any date or time change of a scheduled examination requires the approval of the professor.  The professor will be notified of any attempt to change a scheduled exam.

  •       All books, notes, etc must be deposited outside of the testing cubicle unless the exam explicitly states, "open books and notes."  Any claim of open books/notes by the student will be verified by calling the professor.

  •       Students are required to arrive on time for any scheduled examination.  A delay of more than 15 minutes will be noted on the examination and the professor will be notified.

  •       Time limits are strictly enforced.  When time is up, the proctor will photocopy the exam.  After the student has completed the exam, the photocopy, the completed exam, and an explanation will be sent to the professor.

  •       All academic policies are in effect at the Learning Assistance Center.  Any academic dishonesty will be immediately reported to the professor and LAC test-taking privileges will be revoked.

COURSE SUBSTITUTION POLICIES AND PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES

Request: Students requesting waivers or substitutions must contact the Director of the Learning Assistance Center to initiate a formal request.

Documentation: Students requesting course substitutions must be registered with the Learning Assistance Center and have on-file current and comprehensive documentation from a qualified professional.

  • The documentation should explicitly state the need for substitution or waiver of specific course requirements and why it is needed.

  • The Director of the Learning Assistance Center will review the student's documentation and prepare a synopsis and recommendation to the Course Waivers and Substitutions Committee.

Committee: A committee on Course Waivers and Substitutions will be comprised of the Dean of the Center for Adult and Part Time Students, the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Dean of Social Sciences, the Dean of the Williams College of Business, and the Director of the Learning Assistance Center.

  •       The Dean of the Center for Adult and Part Time Students chairs the committee and will organize the meetings at the request of the Director of the Learning Assistance Center.

  •       The committee, if not satisfied with the documentation, may request further testing and evaluation from qualified professionals at the university's expense.

  •       The committee may request additional input from qualified professionals regarding the feasibility of waivers and substitutions. (i.e. input from a department chair on the nature and role of a class in a course of study).

Notification: The Director of the Learning Assistance Center will notify the student, in writing, of the decision regarding course waivers and substitutions within one week of the committee's decision.

  •       The Chair of the committee will contact the University Registrar and inform him/her of the waiver or substitution granted.

Right of Appeal: Students have the right to appeal the committee's decision.  Students who wish such a review must make the request, in writing, to the Director of the Learning Assistance Center.  The Director will forward the request to the Academic Vice President for his review.  The Academic Vice President will notify the student, in writing, of his decision within 30 days of the request for review.
