Coaching

In keeping with the spirit of the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis (care for the whole, individual person) and Xavier University’s mission to educate the whole person, “engaging and forming students intellectually, morally and spiritually,” the Xavier Learning Assistance Center (LAC) will be implementing a  Co-Active Coaching program. This new service will be available to students in the fall of 2004.  Coaching is not counseling, but an ongoing partnership between the coach and the student to help the student set and achieve goals in their academic lives.  The Director, Ann Dinan, and the Assistant Director, Stephanie Mosier, will be trained as professional coaches through The Coaches Training Institute (CTI).

What is Coaching?

Coaching is a supportive alliance between the coach and the client, designed to empower the client forward in achieving their goals.  It does not involve advice or instruction, but inquiry, listening, and challenging, and focuses on the present moment.  We believe that all aspects of a person’s life are interrelated, and that the client already possesses the ingenuity and resources to succeed.  Through coaching, the client can uncover these abilities and accomplish extraordinary things.

The Coaches Training Institute (CTI)

The Coaches Training Institute is widely recognized as the industry leader in the area of coaching, not only domestically but world-wide.  More information about the organization and the training courses can be found on the CTI website

Academic Coaching at the Learning Assistance Center

In the university setting, coaching focuses on the student’s academic goals, emphasizing their grades and career decisions.  It gives students who are struggling, the opportunity to examine their own resources and strengths.  With the guidance of a coach, these students will be able to implement the necessary changes to achieve their desired success.

The Pilot Plan

During the initial training period in the 2004-2005 academic year, the Director and Assistant Director of the LAC will meet with LAC students who are in need of coaching.  These students will receive 30-60 minutes of coaching per week.    Additionally, a great deal of time will be spent talking with professors, parents, advisors, and members of other university divisions.
