Spring is here, and it’s brought along with it a lot of things going on around campus. Find out how to apply to become an Interlink mentor and learn the winners of the second annual international photo contest. Interested? Read on!

 INTERLINK MENTOR PROGRAM
 Do you like meeting new people? Would you like to help welcome people from all over the world to Xavier? Then Interlink might just be for you. The Interlink Mentor Program is an orientation program designed to welcome new students who are international, and incorporates current students in helping new students acclimate to life at Xavier and the United States. Interlink mentors also help plan fun and exciting events throughout the school year, such as the Cross-Cultural Retreat and International Education Week.  International Photo Contest - Winners announced at April 4 Reception -: 
This year a record number of 375 submissions were entered to the contest. These submissions were narrowed down to 31 finalists in two categories. Over 900 individuals from the Xavier community voted on their favorites. For those of you who have been following the international photo contest and anxiously awaiting the results, we have them for you!

Congratulations to the following winners of the 2nd annual international photo contest:

1st place - Rebecca Collins, '00 - "Shy Boy" - Kabula, Kenya

2nd place - Hem Joshi, Department of Math and Computer Science - "Rice Plantation in a Hilly Area" - Shexa, Nepal

The photos will continue to be displayed in the Faces of the World Lounge (2nd floor of Gallagher Student Center) through the end of the semester.  An online gallery of the images will also be available.   

Attention all graduating students!!!

This year you will once again have the opportunity to purchase and wear a sash with the flag of your country at Commencement.  The sashes are offered at a discounted price of $10 a piece.  If you are interested in wearing a flag sash at commencement, please bring $10 and sign up at the Romero Center by Friday April 18. Sashes with two flags are an additional $8. Your country's flag will also be displayed on stage at commencement, so please confirm that you will be attending commencement by emailing mckinneys1@xavier.edu by April 18, as well.  To view the international sashes, please visit the following link: http://www.visionwear.com/intersash.html

 

 

 Tax Deadlines

The deadline for filing an income tax return is April 15 (postmarked) if you earned income in 2007 and are still present in the US.  Please note that you must file both federal and state taxes.  Xavier international students can file state taxes through the Accountancy department.  You must have an appointment to receive this service.  Contact Shirlee James at 513-745-3236 to make an appointment. 

 

Students who did not earn income or if are currently physically outside of the U.S. must fill out a form 8843.  The deadline to submit these forms is June 15.  8843 forms are available in the Romero Center.

 

Relay for Life

Come join the ISS team as they participate in Relay for Life April 18-19, raising awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society.  It is an 18 hour walk starting at 6:00 pm Friday and ending at 12:00 pm Saturday.  If you are interested in joining the Relay for Life team, sign-ups are available in OISS.  Please consider this worthy endeavor!

TUES Apr 8 Now What?  Leadership After XU If you’re interested in finding out where XU alumni have gone after graduation and what opportunities lie ahead for you, then come to this event!  Brought to you by Student Alumni Association and Peer Leadership Team, mark your calendars for 4-5 pm today in Clocktower Lounge.

 

Also, Leadership Movie Madness presents “Ratatouille” in the Clocktower Lounge from 6-8 pm.

 

WEDS Apr 9 Today is Holyland/Interfaith Coffee Hour Come enjoy great food, good company, and have fun.  From 3:30 to 4:30 pm today in Faces of the World Lounge, don’t miss an interesting get-together.

 

The Italian-American Club will be hosting a viewing of the film Life is Beautiful at 10 pm at the GSC Theatre.

 

THURS Apr 10 Transphobia: How Do We Know it When We See It?  is another session of the Brown Bag Lunch Series at the Women’s Center.  From 11:30- 12:30 pm at XU’s Women Center, join Stephanie Brzuzy, PhD, Chair, department of social work as she facilitates this discussion focusing on awareness.

 

FRI Apr 11 Come to the annual International Fair!  It takes place today on the Greenspace from 3:00 pm- 6:00 pm.  If you’re interested in hosting a table of your own to teach others about your culture, music, food, etc., sign-ups are in Romero International Center!  Any questions can be answered in OISS.  MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND GET READY FOR AN INFORMATIVE AND FUN EVENT!

Xavier Honors Day: Saturday April 12th from 2:00-3:30pm in the Conaton Board Room. Celebrate the leadership, scholarship and accomplishments of Xavier's students, faculty, staff and clubs.

Fantastic Future Events

 

Trade Justice Conversation Panel is an event brought to you by XU Fair Traders.  Be sure not to miss a Fair Trade discussion featuring guests from the XU community as well as the outlying communities around Xavier.  This event will take place Wednesday, April 16th at 7:00 pm in Kelley Auditorium.

 

April the 16th is also the last day to apply to the Kroger 2008-2009 Garnes/ Ward Scholarship for upperclassmen minority students.  For more information, pick up brochures in OISS.

 

Xavier University’s 1st Annual Peace and Justice Art Show:

Peace and Justice Programs is inviting the Xavier community to submit art work that promotes “dialogue and critical reflection on social, economic, and political justice issues both domestically and internationally.”  This show runs from April 17 to May 19, 2008.  All art must be submitted by noon to the Dorothy Day House on April 10, 2008.  For more information, contact Patrick Welage at x3768 or welage@xavier.edu.

Take Back the Night is Cincinnati’s annual rally against sexual assault on April 25th.  The Women’s Center will be hosting a pre-rally gathering at 5:00 pm.  Pizza, t-shirts, and transportation to the rally downtown will be available.  RSVP by April 18 for a great opportunity to show solidarity for equality and respect!

 

Barcelona: A City and its Novels”: Join Dr. Wells, an expert in contemporary Spanish literature, for an interesting discussion on the city and authors associated with it.  This event will take place on Monday, April 21 at 4:00 pm in Kelley Auditorium.
