Institutional Grant Awards

  • A three year grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration's Advanced Education Nursing program to develop a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) concentration in the MSN program (2008).

  • Annual funding award by PNC Bank to support the Early Childhood Education Coordinator (2004-2008).

  • Funding from The H. B., E. W. and F. R. Luther Charitable Foundation to endow a scholarship fund for students in music or the performing arts (2002, 2005, 2008).

  • Annual funding from the Macy’s Foundation and Macy’s Customer and Credit Services for the Macy’s Multicultural Award, presented to an African American junior who has demonstrated high academic achievement, along with outstanding commitment and leadership within the Xavier community and Black Student Association (2004 -2008).

  • Grants awarded by the Charles H. Dater Foundation to support the Summer Service Internship Program (1991, 2001-2008)

  • Grants awarded by the Ohio Department of Education to support  Summer Honors Institute  (2006 and 2007).

  • Funding from the Fidelity Foundation to support construction of the new Williams College of Business Building (2007).

  • Funding from the Jacob G. Schmidlipp Trusts, Fifth Third Bank trustee, to support an endowed scholarship fund and the new Williams College of Business Building (2007).

  • Grants awarded by Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. to support the Summer Service Internship Program (2001, 2003-2007).

  • Scholarship funding awarded (1998, 2001, 2004, 2007) by the Clare Boothe Luce Program of the Henry Luce Foundation provides two-year scholarships for female students in chemistry, computer science, or physics. 

  • Grants awarded by the John Hauck Foundation to support the Hauck Faculty/Student Research Program in the physics department (1997-2010).

  • Annual funding awarded by the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund to support a scholarship for an entrepreneurial studies major (2003-2008) .

  • 3M Foundation Vision Grant awarded to create a collaborative partnership between Xavier students and the Evanston Business Association to revitalize Evanston's Montgomery Road business corridor, which borders the University (2005).

  • Funding awarded through the U. S. Department of Education's TRIO programs (2001 and 2005) to establish student support services office that assists students who are low-income, first-generation and/or have disabilities.

  • Funding from the Duke Energy (formerly Cinergy) Foundation to provide four-year scholarships for two students in business (2005).

  • Funding from the Health Resources and Sciences Administration's Nursing Education, Practice and Retention Grants Program to support the development of Xavier's MIDAS (Master's in Nursing: Direct Entry as a Second Degree) Program (2005).

  • Funding from the William H. Albers Foundation to support a faculty/student research program in biology (1997, 2001, and 2005).

  • Community Outreach Partnering Center (COPC) grant awarded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to support community projects involving Evanston and Norwood (2004).

  • Grant awarded by the Clement and Ann Buenger Foundation to establish the initiative for Catholic Schools, which enhances the quality of leadership and of mathematics and science teaching in Cincinnati area Catholic elementary schools (2003).

  • Grants awarded by the National Science Foundation through its Major Research Instrumentation program (2001 and 2002), Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) program (1999 and 2000), Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP) program (2002), and Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarships (CSEMS) program (2003).  These grants support research, curriculum, and student support projects in physics, computer science, biology, and mathematics. 

  • Grants awarded (1997 and 2003) by the McGregor Fund to support team--taught, interdisciplinary course development.  The 2003 grant supports the University’s  Philosophy, Politics and the Public (PPP) program.

  • Funded awarded by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation to endow scholarships for the Toledo Pacesetters Program (1997, 1998, and 2002).

  • Challenge grant awarded by the Kresge Foundation to fund the West Row renovation (1999).

  • Challenge grant awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities to endow an interdisciplinary Ethics/Religion and Society Chair and fund a lecture series for the E/RS program (1997).

Recent Grant Awards Made to Xavier Faculty/Staff


Congratulations to Linda Moore, Nursing, on the award of a grant from Duke University with support from the Helene Fund Foundation.  The $5,000 grant will provide funds for research on evaluating second-degree programs in nursing at Xavier.
Congratulations to Cheryl Nunez, Vice Provost for Diversity, on the award of a grant from the Jesuit Network for Equitable Excellence in Higher Education.  The $2,475 grant will fund a graduate student to analyze first-year student outcomes to help identify the student characteristics most highly correlated with the first-year retention and academic success of first-time, full-time, traditional-age undergraduates.  The results will enable the University to enhance appropriate support services.  (October 2008). 

Congratulations to Jennifer Wies, Women’s Center, on the award of a grant from the Jesuit Network for Equitable Excellence in Higher Education.  The $2,288 grant will fund books, a retreat and community building events.  The project will provide support and mentoring for first generation college women considering graduate education. (October 2008).


Congratulations to Gary Lewandowski, Computer Science on the award of a grant from the National Science Foundation.  The $22,476 will fund your project to complete a multi-institutional survey of students' pre-conceptions of key computing concepts at the start of the first course in computer science, through qualitative and quantitative testing will contribute significantly to the teaching of computer science at the university level. (July 2008).

Congratulations to Tom Kessinger, department of secondary and special education, on the award of a Learn and Serve America grant award to the Wyoming City Schools.  The $30,000 grant will provide instruction and training as well as support services for Wyoming teachers, students and volunteers who are involved in providing courses, clubs, activities and projects for service-learning. (July 2008)


Congratulations to Susan Schmidt, Childhood Education and Literacy and the Department of Nursing on being awarded two grants from the Health Resources Services Administration.  The AENT award of $66,979 will provide scholarship assistance to MSN students.  The AEN award of $809,090 will develop a Clinical Nurse Leader concentration in the MSN program. (June 2008).

Congratulations to Shelagh Larkin, social work, on the award of a grant from the Council on Social Work Education/Gero-Ed Center.  The $5,000 grant will provide funds for faculty development and course development. (June 2008).


Congratulations to Michael Goldweber, computer science, on the award of a grant from ACM SIGCSE.  The $5,000 grant will fund summer stipends for the creation and analysis of a computer science education survey (January 2008).


Congratulations to Cynthia Geer, Childhood Education and Literacy, on her participation in a grant awarded to Miami University from the Ohio Department of Education.  This grant funds the proposal, "Design of a Professional Development Program in Science for School Year Implementation."  The project involves Xavier in planning a physics and astronomy professional development program for middle school science teachers in Cincinnati Public Schools, Norwood Schools, Goshen District, Hamilton City Schools, Miami University, and Xavier University (April 2008).
Congratulations to the music department, on the award of $60,000,from an anonymous foundation in support of music education scholarships (December 2007)

Congratulations to Aaron Baba, chemistry, on the award of a subgrant from Lincoln University through the United States Department of Agriculture.  Dr. Baba will conduct research with faculty at Lincoln University on the use of herbs as de-wormers for sheep and goats under natural grazing conditions.  The $21,624 grant will fund a summer stipend, supplies and travel for Dr. Baba (December 2007).


Congratulations to the entrepreneurial program, on the award of the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund, Inc.  This $18,000 will fund one McGowan Scholar, a student majoring in entrepreneurial studies, for the 2008-2009 academic year (November 2007).
Congratulations to Heidrun Schmitzer, physics, on the award of the Cottrell College Science Award funded through Research Corporation.  This $44,995 grant will fund summer research for Dr. Schmitzer and two students.  This is Dr. Schmitzer’s second grant from Research Corporation (November 2007).

Congratulations to Steve Herbert, physics, on the award of a grant funded to the University of Cincinnati from the National Science Foundation.  Steve Herbert is a co-principal investigator on the grant which will fund research to develop a prototype of an all-electric, ballistic Datta-Das spinFET (Spin Field Effect Transistor) (August 2007).


Congratulations to the physics department, on the award of a grant from  the John Hauck Foundation to support the Faculty/Student Research Program..  The $50,000 grant will fund stipends for six students and two faculty members (Aug. 2007).
