The Brueggeman center seeks involvement from Xavier students in its many programs and activities. The center also provides opportunities for fellowships as well as an essay contest.
Cohen Family Student Fellows Program
A generous grant from the Julian Winter Cohen estate has provided funds for the student fellow program. Each year the Brueggeman center will offer fellowships for up to four students to devote a portion of their time as Brueggeman Fellows. One student will be selected from theology and one from each of the three colleges at Xavier. They will spend the year helping the center develop and carry out programs, engaging in the ongoing discussions, seminars and workshops that the center sponsors and engaged in a joint interdisciplinary research project which will be determined by the director and the fellows. The results of this research project will be presented at the year-end Brueggeman dinner. The money from the bequest would support the fellows and other relevant programming. The Ralph and Julia Cohen Student Essay Contest
Each year the University holds a student essay contest for Xavier students and juniors and seniors at selected regional high schools. The essays are on an important issue of justice and global responsibility. The topic is identified and relevant research materials are made available through the Brueggeman resource center in the McDonald Library on the Xavier campus. Faculty at the University and the high schools are informed of the competition and the topic during the previous academic year and are encouraged to integrate the topic into appropriate courses. The Brueggeman center works with other centers and programs at the University to sponsor prominent national and international speakers on the topic. High school students who enter or are considering entering the contest are encouraged to use the Brueggeman resource center and to attend any lectures held on campus that pertain to the topic. In addition, the center arrange for them to meet with Brueggeman student fellows for discussions on about the topic. The competition is widely publicized both on campus and at selected high schools. The winners are invited to a presentation at the year-end Brueggeman dinner. A board of judges appropriate to each level of the competition selects the winners. Prizes are as follows:
Xavier students: First place $1000, second place $500, third place $250
High school students: First place $500, second through fifth place $250
