Every university
has a history; Xavier has a heritage. Pride stems from
centuries of Jesuit commitment to educating the whole person.
This tradition originated in the middle of the 16th century
with the founder of the Society of Jesus, St. Ignatius
of Loyola. Xavier’s Jesuit
tradition of academic excellence inspires students
not only to think critically and communicate effectively,
but also to foster a love of learning and a commitment
to service.
The University offers a comprehensive
educational experience. At the undergraduate level, students
can choose from 70 majors in the colleges of Arts
and Sciences, Social Sciences and the Williams College
of Business. All students complete the University’s
core curriculum, providing a strong foundation in the
liberal arts and sciences. In addition, Xavier offers
a wide range of minors and co-curricular activities,
as well as pre-professional programs in medicine, dentistry,
law, pharmacy, mortuary science and engineering. Graduate
programs are offered in business, education, psychology,
health services administration, nursing, criminal justice,
English, theology and humanities. The University’s
first doctoral program, in psychology, enrolled its first
class in 1997.
With a student/faculty ratio of 13:1,
students are the primary focus at Xavier. Class sizes
average 24 students per class, ensuring an intimate learning
environment. Xavier University Libraries provide access
to information resources for research and study in all
subject areas. Information concerning class schedules,
registration and academic records is available from the
office of the registrar. Numerous academic support services
are available to help students succeed in achieving their
academic, career and personal development goals.
Xavier is a vital member of the Greater
Cincinnati community. Through public lectures, theater
and music performances, a variety of centers offering
professional services and training opportunities, and
other outreach and service activities, the University
and its students are active participants in the community.
